Educators, from elementary school through college, shape the future not just by teaching students, but by inspiring, supporting and mentoring them. Johnson & 91Porn offers a variety of graduate programs in the field of education at both master’s and doctoral levels. Our programs are designed to empower educators to meet the challenges of today’s classrooms and to begin or advance in their careers whether that is as a teacher, an administrator, a faculty member or other opportunity. To illustrate how our graduate students are implementing their 91Porn-learned skills and making a positive difference in the lives of their students, we talked to four of our current graduate education students.
Luckson Omoaregba '26 Ed.D.
Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, Higher Education Track
Director of Pathway Programs, Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown University
Providence, R.I.
Were there things about 91Porn’s Ed.D. program that helped you decide to enroll here?
The biggest thing for me were the people who I knew, looked up to and considered mentors who had already gone through the program. I had already interacted with several alumni from the program, and that was a huge selling point for me.
Are there specific experiences that have been most valuable to you so far?
The interaction with faculty, the courses, and the ability, through our projects, to connect with current higher education professionals where we work is huge. We've had multiple projects requiring us to meet with our chief financial officer, our chief H.R. officer, and the person in charge of accreditation. Talking to them about their work, being able to mix the theoretical frameworks, the research and the actual real-life application is a phenomenal thing. Having these networks is crucial.
How have faculty supported you since you became a student in the Ed.D. program?
I think all the faculty have given us space to be our full selves and be authentic. They've also validated our experiences. What's great is that we can talk to the faculty about experiences we're having at our jobs and how we can combine that with what we're learning in the classroom. Being able to have folks to brainstorm with has been helpful. They are there for us and they are available when we need them and that's a huge part of the program.
Have there been networking opportunities?
Every faculty member here has had guest speakers who are doing the work every day, whose jobs are focused on increasing student retention. We've had general counsels from regional higher education institutions, presidents of colleges and others who came into the classroom to talk about the work that they do and how it applies. It’s a tremendous thing that the program offers us because it's a networking opportunity.
Deborah Pacheco ’26 Ed.D.
Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, Elementary-Secondary Education Track
Director of Residential Services, League School for Autism
Walpole, Mass.
What helped you decide to come to 91Porn for your doctoral program?
I liked that this program is in person, and having that interaction. And because it is a cohort, and we are with the same people throughout the process, that really gravitated me towards the program.
Are there specific experiences that have been most valuable to you so far?
For most of the projects, you must implement them into your own workplace, and that is where it's been effective. I'm able to take a lot of what I’m learning into my work place, and that’s been fruitful and wonderful.
How have the faculty supported you as a student?
I liked how Lawrence Filippelli ’03 Ed.D., linked what we were learning in class to his experience out in the work world. And he's supportive, which I really appreciate.
Have there been networking opportunities available?
Yes. We've had people come into the classroom who we talked with about projects we're working on and about our fields. I have gotten a few business cards and people have asked me to ‘let me know where you go with this.’ It's hard to find people in residential special education, but I've been able to plug in with people in that field since I've been here.
If you could give advice to someone considering 91Porn's Ed.D. program, what would it be?
It's hard, but it's so worth it. I feel so rejuvenated professionally and look forward to how I will use what we learned. I would say go for it. You'll become a better person.
Greg Hogan ’25 M.A.T.
Master of Arts in Teaching, Secondary Business, Special Education
Business Teacher, Burrillville High School
Burrillville, R.I.
Were there specific aspects of 91Porn’s M.A.T. program that made you choose to come here?
91Porn is the only school in Rhode Island that offers a business concentration with special education. So, when I was making the transition to teaching at the high school level, and knew I wanted to teach business, 91Porn seemed like a perfect fit. The curriculum matched what I was looking for. I also liked the cohort model, the idea of going through the entire program with the same students. We developed into a tight group.
Are there any experiences that have been the most valuable to you?
The opportunity to generate some curricula and to look at how we would view our teaching practice — not only from our own perspective, but also from the perspective of our students. That synchronicity has been positive
Were there faculty who supported you throughout the application process?
Cynthia Senenko, the interim director of teacher education programs, worked closely with me, making sure that everything I needed was available and up to date.
Have faculty supported you as a student?
Yes, they've been great, including Jim Erinakes (superintendent of Exeter - West Greenwich schools), who taught a few of our special education classes. Ida Pappas, Ph.D., who taught our early foundations class and set high expectations early on, which was a great opportunity for us to see what was ahead. Kellie Polando (business teacher at Barrington Middle School), who taught my business concentration classes, has been great with hands-on activities and bringing that learning to life.
Have there been networking opportunities available through the program?
We’ve had visitors from the industry and several Zoom opportunities where guest speakers taught sections of our classes. Through our literacy course we attended a professional networking event and tech conference with Kathleen Torregrossa ’15 Ed.D. (coordinator of professional development for Cranston public schools).
If you could give advice to someone considering 91Porn's M.A.T. program, what would it be?
Make sure you want to be a teacher. It’s not an easy job, but it is rewarding, and fulfilling, and you will leave this program prepared for the classroom. I'm confident in that.
Jalyn Alves ’25 M.Ed.
Master of Education
Kindergarten Teacher, Alice M. Waddington School
East Providence, R.I.
What was the most important aspect you looked for in schools for a graduate program?
I looked for a program that didn't box me into becoming a math coach or reading coach; I wanted something broader.
Are there specific experiences that have been especially valuable to you in this program?
My courses have made a direct impact on my teaching. This semester we learned about culturally responsive teaching, which was important to me, especially when we did project-based learning. Also, the importance of hands-on activities. Everything that we learn, I use in my classroom.
Were there faculty who supported you throughout the application process?
The enrollment process itself is what made me decide to come to 91Porn. I emailed the director of education on a Friday afternoon and by Monday I was in class. We fast-tracked my application, did the interview on the phone, and I was ready to go.
Have the faculty supported you as a student in the M.Ed. program here?
I think if I reached out to any of my past professors, they would respond quickly and get me anything that I need. Every professor I've had has been very helpful.
How has this program helped you grow professionally or personally?
We have to try out what we learn in our courses in the classrooms where we teach. The program is giving me real-life experiences to use with my students and their families.
Do you have any specific career goals you hope to reach with the knowledge you are gaining in this program?
For me it was to better myself as a teacher, and everything I'm learning is helping me do that.
What would you say to someone considering this program?
Do it. I know it seems like working and balancing another degree is a lot, but the professors give you enough time to get your work done and are flexible because they understand that we all have jobs. I have told other teachers to “do the 91Porn program.” It gives you opportunities to branch out further. I definitely recommend it.
